1 Peter 2:2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
A little friend came to visit me the
other day and we had a great time.
Everyone should spend an afternoon with a 4 year old to gain a different
perspective on things. A person can
learn a lot from someone who can’t even see over the countertop.
My young friend asked me for a
banana. Sure thing! Bananas are healthy and very good for a
growing kid. I gave him the banana and
proceeded to get dinner ready. We began
to play a game….we will call it the banana game. He put the banana on his head. A banana hat!
On his chin….a banana beard. On
his stomach, a banana belt and so on.
That piece of fruit was all over the place and then the unthinkable
happened. The stem broke off. And all of a sudden what was so appetizing
wasn’t anymore. He asked to throw it
away. In my best “mom” voice, I said it
was perfectly fine and he could eat it with his dinner.
That poor banana sat neglected through
dinner. Stayed there while the table was
cleaned. My little friend left with his
mom and didn’t take the banana. Through the long lonely night, the banana
remained on the kitchen table until the next morning when I decided, despite
its beat-up state, to eat it with my breakfast.
How delicious it was! I ate of it, enjoyed the sweetness, gained
nutritionally from it, and was satisfied once it had been consumed. I was reminded of something, too.
We have God’s word at our
fingertips. There are so many ways in
our modern world to have access to scripture.
I have 2 Bible apps myself and I’m sure there are plenty more out there.
Most families own multiple Bibles and we think nothing of buying another when
we see one with a cool cover or space for journaling or coloring. (Imagine!)
But what if we have all of those things and never truly take the time to taste
of God’s word and see that it is good? What if we are really just playing the banana
game with God’s word and when we are bored with it, we leave it lying there
while we go do something more interesting?
My little friend missed out on a
satisfying treat because he was playing a game and wasn’t serious. He’s 4. What’s
my excuse?
Let them give thanks to the LORD
for His loving kindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! For He has
satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is
good.
